Creationtide: Be like a mountain

September 23, 2018

Scripture for this week:

Isaiah 65:17-25

I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I am creating; for I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy, and its people as a delight. I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and delight in my people; no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it, or the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days, or an old person who does not live out a lifetime; for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a hundred will be consid- ered accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labor in vain, or bear children for calamity; for they shall be offspring blessed by the Lord–and their descendants as well. Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox; but the serpent– its food shall be dust! They shall not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, says the Lord.

Psalm 48:1-11

1  Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised; * in the city of our God is the holy hill.

2  Beautiful and lofty, the joy of all the earth, is the hill of Zion, * the very center of the world and the city of the great ruler.

3  God is in her citadels; * and known to be her sure refuge.

4  Behold, the rulers of the earth assembled * and marched forward together.

5  They looked and were astounded; * they retreated and fled in terror.

6  Trembling seized them there; * they writhed like a woman in childbirth, like ships of the sea when the east wind shatters them.

7  As we have heard, so have we seen, in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God; * God has established her for ever.

8  We have waited in silence on your loving-kindness, O God, * in the midst of your temple.

9  Your praise, like your Name, O God, reaches to the world’s end; * your right hand is full of justice.

10  Let Mount Zion be glad and the cities of Judah rejoice, * because of your judgments.

11  Make the circuit of Zion; walk round about her; * count the number of her towers.

Mark 16:14-18

Later he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were sitting at the table; and he upbraided them for their lack of faith and stubbornness, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. The one who believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
