The first decade of St. Jude’s

The Santa Clara Valley was once known for its wonderful fruit and produce, including the apricots in large orchards for which Cupertino was known. The Diocese of California led by Bishop Block realized a need for more Episcopal Churches in the Santa Clara Valley and had purchased land in the area. In the summer of 1961, the Diocese sold some of this land and purchased 6.3 acres with a Farmhouse and small cottage on the corner of Stelling and McClellan for $88,500 for the purpose of starting a new church. The new church was named St. Jude the Apostle Episcopal Church by Bishop Pike and established by suffragan Bishop Millard on December 11, 1961 with the first service of the church taking place in January 1962. The Rev. David Crump was appointed as the first Vicar.
