Morning Devotional

Here is a self-guided devotional to use at any time throughout the day.

1.  Opening Sentence

Arise! Shine! For your light has come.

2. Morning prayer

God to enfold me, God to surround me, God in my speaking, God in my thinking.
God in my sleeping, God in my waking, God in my watching, God in my hoping.
God in my life, God in my lips, God in my soul, God in my heart.
God in my sufficing, God in my slumber, God in mine ever-living soul,
God in mine eternity.

OR

God you are in this place, Fill us with your power, Cover us with your peace, Show us your presence.
God help us to know, We are in your hands, We are under your protection, We are covered by your love.
God we ask you today, To deliver us from evil, To guide us in our travels, To defend us from all harm.
God give us now, Eyes to see the invisible, Ears to hear your call, Hands to do your work,
And hearts to respond to your love.

OR

In the silence of the stars, In the quiet of the hills, In the heaving of the sea,
Speak, Lord.

In the stillness of this room, In the calming of my mind, In the longing of my heart,
Speak, Lord.

In the voice of a friend, In the chatter of a child, In the words of a stranger,
Speak, Lord.

In the opening of a book, In the watching a film, In the listening to music,
Speak, Lord.

For your servant listens.

3. Silence (about 15 minutes)

4. The Lord’s Prayer

5. Naming of prayer concerns (optional)

6. Closing prayer:

O God, the wellspring of life, pour into our hearts the living water of your grace, that refreshed by you, we may live this day in steadfast reliance on the strength you give; Through our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

OR

Creator God, you call us to love and serve you with body, mind and spirit through loving your creation and our sisters and brothers. Open our hearts in compassion as we offer these prayers and discern the call to serve you this day.  Amen.

OR

Holy and eternal God, in you we live and move and have our being. In all our cares and occupations, guide and govern us by your Spirit, that we may both remember and reveal your presence; through our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

7. Benediction

May the light of God illumine the heart of our souls
May the flame of Christ kindle us to love.
May the fire of the Spirit free us to live this day, tonight, and forever. Amen!
